Factory owner Mao runs a tight ship; a strict employer, he manages to keep his workers on side by building a mosque on the premises, emphasising the connection between labour and devotion. But when he appoints an Imam - a mosque leader - without consulting the workers, the tensions created weaken Mao's grandiose designs and threaten to put an end to his exploitation. Africa!' program at the Festival. Awarded the Prize of Hope at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Shot in Liberia, with the support of the current Liberian government, French filmmaker Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s confronting debut film, about child soldiers involved in the conflicts of an unnamed African nation, is as vivid a portrait of the horrors of war as anything that has come before. Sauvaire elicits compelling performances from his cast of unknowns, many former child soldiers themselves, who portray some of the most feral and brutal militia forces ever to hit the big screen. A film about lost innocence, and the struggle of people to hold onto the fragments of their humanity. Further details: www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au

When Muidinga finds a diary amongst a pile of dead bodies, he discovers the story of Farida, a mother who lives on a rusty ship at sea, waiting for the arrival of her missing son. He convinces himself that he’s the boy in the story and, dodging the dangers on both sides of the road, his search for her begins. Further details: www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au

Mouloud’s effort to cheer her up by painting their house yellow has little effect, but when he finds a video message from his son he does everything he can to find a VCR and TV. END OF THE RAINBOW (Guinea) - Melbourne International Film Festival Sun 3 August 7pm at Greater Union 5. Part of the 'Africa! Africa!' program at the Festival. BY AUSTRALIAN film-makers about mining in Africa. The transportation of an entire industrial gold mine from one side of the world to a remote area of Guinea, West Africa, is an epic logistic and filmic event. It’s also an enormous social and economic upheaval for a desperately poor region that has long relied on gold to survive. A fascinating study of labour – from both a Western and African perspective – this documentary reveals the complexities for the local inhabitants as they try to balance traditional cultural practices with a new way of working. Relations with the new mine owners are colourful, feisty and full of hope for a brighter future. Features a soundtrack of traditional West African music.
